What is a Type 2 connector?
A Type 2 connector is a common EV charging plug used for AC charging. It is widely used across Australia and Europe and is found on many public AC chargers, home chargers and destination chargers.
Type 2 is often used for slower or medium-speed charging where a vehicle is parked for a longer period. Many EVs have a Type 2 inlet for AC charging, while CCS2 vehicles use a connector shape that builds on Type 2 with additional DC pins for fast charging.
Why Type 2 matters
Plug compatibility is one of the most important things to check before arriving at a charger. If a charger has a Type 2 socket and the cable is untethered, the driver may need to bring their own compatible Type 2 cable.
On Penguin Power, Type 2 connector information helps drivers understand whether a charger is suitable for their car and whether they may need a cable. It is especially useful for public car parks, hotels, shopping centres and workplaces where AC charging is common.
