What this term means

The glossary explanation will appear here.

What is CHAdeMO?

CHAdeMO is a DC fast-charging connector used by some electric vehicles, particularly older Japanese EVs and earlier models such as some Nissan and Mitsubishi vehicles. It was one of the first widely used DC fast-charging systems.

CHAdeMO allows compatible EVs to charge from dedicated DC chargers. However, many newer EVs in Australia now use CCS2 instead, so CHAdeMO availability can vary by location and charging network.

Why CHAdeMO matters

Drivers of CHAdeMO-compatible vehicles need to check charger listings carefully before travelling, especially on longer trips. A site may have DC fast charging but only offer CCS2 plugs, or it may have one CHAdeMO connector shared with other charging equipment.

On Penguin Power, CHAdeMO is an important plug type field because it helps drivers avoid arriving at a charger they cannot use. It is also helpful when comparing older charging stations, highway stops and mixed-plug public charging locations.
