What this term means

The glossary explanation will appear here.

What is a BEV?

BEV stands for battery electric vehicle. A BEV is a fully electric vehicle that uses a rechargeable battery pack to power one or more electric motors. Unlike a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, a BEV does not have a petrol or diesel engine for driving.

Because a BEV relies entirely on electricity, it needs to be charged from an external power source. This might be a home charger, workplace charger, public AC charger or DC fast charger. The size of the battery, the vehicle’s efficiency and the charging speed all affect how far the vehicle can travel and how long charging takes.

Why BEV matters

Understanding the difference between a BEV and a PHEV is useful when comparing vehicles and planning charging. A BEV driver generally needs more reliable access to charging because there is no fuel engine as a backup.

On Penguin Power, BEV drivers can use charger listings to check plug type, charger speed, location details, access information and nearby amenities before they arrive. Terms such as DC charging, kWh, charging curve and State of Charge are especially relevant to BEV ownership.
