What this term means

The glossary explanation will appear here.

What is battery health?

Battery health describes the condition of an electric vehicle battery and how much useful capacity or performance remains compared with when it was new. It is often linked to State of Health, sometimes shortened to SoH.

A battery with strong health can store energy effectively and support reliable driving range. Over time, normal ageing and use may reduce available capacity, which can slightly reduce the distance the vehicle can travel on a full charge.

Why battery health matters

Battery health is important for long-term ownership, used EV buying, warranty claims and real-world range expectations. It can be affected by heat, high charging speeds, deep discharges, frequent 100 percent charging and the vehicle’s battery management system.

On Penguin Power, battery health helps explain why charging strategy matters. Many drivers charge to around 80 percent for everyday use and reserve 100 percent charging for longer trips where extra range is needed. Understanding battery health also helps users interpret terms such as battery degradation, kWh, charging curve and State of Charge.
