What this term means
The glossary explanation will appear here.
What is battery degradation?
Battery degradation is the gradual reduction in an EV battery’s ability to store energy and deliver performance over time. Like phone or laptop batteries, EV batteries age with use, temperature, charging habits and time.
Degradation does not usually mean a battery suddenly stops working. More commonly, the vehicle’s maximum range slowly reduces as the battery loses some usable capacity. The rate of degradation varies depending on battery chemistry, vehicle design, thermal management, charging behaviour and driving conditions.
Why battery degradation matters
Battery degradation affects long-term EV ownership, resale value and real-world range. Drivers can often support battery health by avoiding unnecessary high State of Charge storage, minimising excessive heat and using DC fast charging sensibly rather than relying on it for every charge.
On Penguin Power, battery degradation is useful context when explaining charging behaviour. It helps drivers understand why charging to 100 percent every time is not always necessary and why battery health matters alongside range, kWh and charging speed.
